  • Tuition

  • At the time of enrolment, ICoN students can choose between two different modes of taking the degree course in Italian Language and Culture: either with tutorials or as a self-guided course.

    Tutoring
Services provided by the tutoring system
    Vouchers for tutorials
    Self-guided study
How the exercises are conducted and assessed for students on the self-guided course

  • Tutoring
  • Tutors enrolled in the tutoring system are subdivided into classes corresponding to the subjects that are the focus of study in the given class. For each class, a discussion forum is created in which students can take part in a discussion led by a tutor. Tutors provide helpful guidance in study of the teaching modules forming part of the programme, give explanations, help students to grasp the connections between one module and another, suggest an interpretive line of analysis, prompt students to undertake research projects, assign and correct homework. This means that the teaching activity does not merely aim to transfer the knowledge incorporated in the modules, but also to help students develop interpretive abilities and operational skills.

During the semester, the tutor sets, corrects and assesses two written papers on subjects addressed during the module; the nature of the papers assigned is highly similar to that of the final paper. The results of the papers and the tests, together with assessment of a student’s participation in the forum, represent a part of the final assessment, together with the two examinations (which are fully identical with those taken by students on the self-guided course).

Examinations will be taken at the appointed centre closest to a student’s place of residence. For all regulations and procedures required in order to register for an examination session, students can consult the Time Schedule and Deadlines. During the preparation phase, a Community Forum will be available (ICoN Cafe) and students will be able to access the site resources (Library, Museum, Encyclopaedia). For any problems referring to the examinations, students can contact the Teaching Secretariat.

  • Vouchers for tutorials

The ICoN tutorial “voucher” guarantees access to a subject forming part of the degree course. At the beginning of every semester, all students who have completed the enrolment procedure receive a number of vouchers equal to the number of subjects they are required to take in that semester.

A student who decides not to take all the proposed subjects can opt, through the options available in the enrolment or re-enrolment procedure, to retain one or more vouchers for subsequent semesters, in order to take these subjects at a later date.

At the end of the course (that is to say, after completion of the entire degree) all unused vouchers will be automatically cancelled.

Starting from the IInd semester of the 1st year of their course, students can also independently purchase vouchers enabling them to repeat subjects in which they did not pass the final examination, or to take in advance some subjects of the following semester (the latter opportunity is conditional upon availability of the tutor for the subjects in question, and also upon the logical sequence of the subjects themselves: for instance, students cannot take Italian Literature 2 without having passed Italian Literature 1).

During the entire span of the degree course, all enrolled students are allowed to resit the final examinations of a total of 6 courses in which they did not obtain a passing grade. No extra cost will be imposed for these resits, but students will not be entitled to the corresponding tutoring service.

  • Self-guided study
  • On the basis of the credits associated with each syllabus within the Degree Course in Italian Languge and Culture for Foreigners, students who opt for self-guided study carry out their studies entirely on their own, studying the modules - grouped together by subject, - that are specified as constituting the study program for the given semester. Students then take the self-assessment tests at the end of each teaching unit and at the end of each module.

The scores obtained in the module-final tests will constitute an integral part of the final assessment, together with the results of the two examinations that will be set: a test and an essay on the topics addressed in the modules. These examinations will be taken in the appointed centres closest to the student’s place of residence.

For all regulations and procedures required in order to register for an examination session, students can consult the Time Schedule and Deadlines. During the preparation phase, Community Forums will be available and students will be able to access the site resources (Library, Museum, Encyclopaedia, Audio Gallery, Video Gallery). For any problems referring to the examinations, students can contact the Teaching Secretariat.

  • How the exercises are conducted and assessed for students on the self-guided course
  • 1. In order to be assessed as contributing to the examination, the exercises - which are available at any time of the year the year - must be done within 27 December (for the semester beginning in September) and within 17 June (for the semester beginning in March).

    2. Assessment by means of the tests: mathematical average for the final tests of the obligatory modules of the subject (50% of the total, with the possibility of rounding up to the next whole number in the case of odd numbers, eg. 4 final tests out of 7, three out of 5, etc.), with reference to the modules indicated at the beginning of the semester; mathematical average + bonus of 3 points for each of the remaining modules taken by the student as optional courses. Below 50%, the assessment of the exercises is I (insufficiente, "fail") regardless of the mark actually achieved. If documented technical difficulties arise, the board of examiners will be duly informed of the problem.

    3. For the subjects in which the student intends to take the examination, the exercises are assessed on the date of the last day before the deadline (see point 1). The result of the final assessment is indicated by a letter (A, B, C, I); for the final mark (expressed as a mark out of thirty), the Board of Examiners may assign:

  • up to 3 points (and distinction) for an overall result = A
  • up to 2 points for an overall result = B
  • up to 1 point for an overall result = C
  • 4. If a student decides to take his examination in a different examination session, he/she will only be evaluated those exercises taken during the semester of the examination session chosen.
The average will be calculated on the basis of these final tests. The evaluation of exercises done in the previous semester will be cancelled.
